Post Storm Home Repairs

People across the nation are praying that April will bring warm temperatures and sunshine, and put an end this crazy snow-filled winter. Over the past few months homes throughout the U.S. have endured feet of snow, bone-chilling winds, and below-freezing temperatures. While many have endured these harsh conditions, some homes cost homeowners thousands of dollars in damages and repairs. Be sure to give your home a quick once-over as soon as you can and take care of any problem areas that may have been created by this winter weather. Repairing damages ahead of time prevents bigger issues down the road- ones that could end up costing you a fortune and leaving you wishing you had fixed it earlier.

The Roof
Having a roof over your head protects you from the winter’s harsh weather, but this also means that your roof and gutters endure the most damage. Come springtime you could find that you have frozen gutters, ice blockages, missing shingles, or structural damage such as sagging or leaking. Roof repairs especially can be costly to homeowners that let damage slip under the radar, so try to remove as much ice and snow from your roof as you can when a storm hits.

Below-freezing temperatures and poorly insulated water pipes in your home don’t play nice, so be sure to give yours a thorough inspection before the temperatures drop next winter. Pipes that are exposed to cold temperatures can freeze or even worse, burst. A burst or frozen water pipe leaves you unable to wash dishes, bathe, and possibly even quench your thirst. These can also cause other costly damages to your home such as flooding. Moral of the story: Be sure your pipes are properly insulated before a storm hits. If you ever do find that your pipes have burst or frozen be sure to call a plumber immediately.

High winds can also take a physical toll on your home by causing siding and shingles to blow right off, revealing the inner layer of siding. Once exposed to the elements, a home’s inner siding can become wet and begin to grow mold. Any holes or leaks created by this wear and tear can also lead to structural damage and bring you unwelcome houseguests such as termites or mice. The cost of having siding replaced or repaired varies based on where you live, the siding material you use, and just how much damage there really is. Be sure to talk to a specialist in order to get an accurate quote.

The homes we live in are pretty resilient, but that doesn’t mean they can’t benefit from a little TLC once in a while. Performing a thorough home inspection every spring can prevent problems in the future, and in turn save you hundreds of dollars. So go ahead, take a lap around your house and look for any winter damages- I’m sure you’ll be glad you did!
