The OTHER Influences On Home Buying

Buying a home is similar to buying a car in the sense that what you buy can say a lot about you. The neighborhood you pick will communicate what type of lifestyle you want to live and the people you want to associate yourself with. For instance, purchasing a home in the city may reflect that you are looking for the hustle and bustle (the fast life, as they say!), while purchasing in the suburbs can say you are looking to settle down, to focus on the next step in life, or that you are looking for a quieter, slower paced neighborhood.

It’s important to keep variables other than the physicalities of the house in mind when you’re making the decision to purchase a home. As noted in the example above, the neighborhood is definitely one of the most important things to consider. Start with the basics, such as school information, crime statistics, or historic versus new construction. Then, get into the details. Consider things such as commute, entertainment options, noise levels, and community associations, just to name a few. All of these aspects will dictate the daily ebb and flow of your life so it’s immensely important to do your research now, especially if you have (or are planning to) have kids!

Another variable, or should I say variables, to consider while buying a home is the people in your life. Those closest to you will most likely want to be heard throughout your purchase decision. Whether it is your significant other, your extended family, or your friends, everyone wants a say. They want to know that you value their knowledge on the situation and respect their input.

Heeding the opinion of others is all a part of the process, and a beneficial one at that. Whether you agree with their insight or not, listening will help keep everyone at an even keel. To leave someone out could make them feel as if you are excluding them from your new life. And in the grand scheme of things, what is a 20 minute conversation that prevents further stress for everyone involved? Especially when you keep in mind that everyone has your best interests at heart. If they’ve purchased a home before, learn from them!

One way to keep variables straight during your home buying adventure is to write it out. Create a list of wants, needs, and non- negotiables with your loved ones that include tangible and intangible housing characteristics. This will help you to prepare for your search and get you familiar with your market. The more information you can give your agent, the better, so don’t be shy!
