What To Look For In Off Campus Housing Part One

What To Look For In Off Campus Housing Part One

Living off campus means you finally have a place of your own. With no parents or RA’s, it’s your turn to make the rules. Whether you choose to live with roommates or prefer to have free reign, there are a few things to consider that will ensure you the ultimate off campus living experience! We’ll be counting down our list of the top 10 considerations over a series of posts, so keep checking back to make sure you are prepared to begin your search for the perfect house or apartment! Let’s begin…

If you’re anything like us, the search for the perfect freshman year roommate can best be described as awkward and inconvenient. Despite valiant efforts to narrow down the options by Facebook messaging everyone who also liked listening to Jimmy Eat World in the 7th grade, you probably learned pretty quickly that there is no such thing as the perfect roommate. The good news is that you can trust us when we say finding roommates to live with off campus will far more rewarding than your experience freshman year.

Since no one is perfect, our best advice is to choose people who are open and easy to get along with. While this might seem obvious—when it comes to collecting monthly rent checks or confronting someone about leaving dirty dishes in the sink—the more comfortable you feel with your roommate, the easier it will be to take care of issues before they truly become a problem. Plus, there are always perks to finding roommates who cook, are freakishly clean, or who are basically your long lost twin.

2. Neighbors
While granite counter tops and updated bathrooms may top more traditional dream house wish lists, with off campus housing, good neighbors take rank. For the nights where the music gets a little too loud and friends stay a little too late, it’s always better if you have neighbors who can join in the party or don’t mind shutting it down.

3. Landlord
Like the neighbors, having a good landlord will determine much of your experience living off campus. Never underestimate the importance of having someone who will respond to emergency maintenance calls on the weekends.
