What To Look For In Off Campus Housing Part Three

Welcome to the third and final installment of our top 10 considerations for moving off campus. In case you missed it, we have been counting down for a few weeks now. Make sure to get caught up on one through seven by checking out our previous posts.
8. Furniture

If you’ve only lived in on-campus housing, chances are you don’t have much of your own furniture on hand. Now that you have a real living room, things like couches and that lazy boy you saw with the built in full body massage option are going to become a necessity as you prepare for the big move off campus.   In the event that your parents have extra furniture laying around, this is often the cheapest option and best place to start. Friends who are graduating are often good for grabbing some pieces, too. Some schools even have a “free & for sale” Facebook group where students post furniture or miscellaneous items they are trying to get rid of. If your school doesn’t have a group like this, consider creating one! If all else fails, there is always IKEA.  

9. Rent and Utilities
One of the best things about living off campus is the freedom that comes with having your own place. But with great freedom comes great responsibility… namely rent and utilities. Get in the habit of paying rent and utilities in a timely fashion each month by establishing a system that works for you and your roommates before the first bill comes. Remember, no matter how you decide to handle the responsibility, paying your bills on time is a must.  

10. Additional Fees
When looking for an apartment, don’t forget to budget for moving costs like application fees and a security deposit as these can end up costing a pretty penny. Also, just because your apartment has 24 hour on-site maintenance doesn’t mean you should call every time a light bulb needs to be changed. Be aware that there are often additional charges associated with maintenance calls. Talk with your agent and take a look at your lease’s fine print to ensure that there will be no surprises when you finally sign on the dotted line.
